University of Zaragoza-LIFTEC(CSIC) today announced that it has been named a GPU Research Center by NVIDIA, the world leader in visual computing.
GPU Research Centers are institutions that embrace and utilize GPU-accelerated computing across multiple research fields, and are at the forefront of some of the world’s most innovative scientific research. GPU-accelerated computing leverages the parallel processing capabilities of GPU accelerators and enabling software to deliver dramatic increases in performance for scientific, artificial intelligence, machine learning, graphics, engineering, and other demanding applications.
University of Zaragoza-LIFTEC(CSIC) was recognized for its advanced research in unsteady shallow water flows using GPUs. The GPU Research Center at University of Zaragoza-LIFTEC (CSIC) has been conducting fluid dynamics research since 2009. Furthermore, university researchers have extensive experience in numerical simulation in fluids, developing in-house software that covers a wide range of basic, applied or environmental flows, including flood prediction; combustion in thermo solar supporting boilers; environmental reactive contaminant dispersion at local, regional, national or continental scales; fuel cell detailed simulations; particle filtration; and flow around wind turbines. The most recent in-house GPU-accelerated simulation software is used for the modelling of two-dimensional free surface flow. Previous developments are being commercialized by Hydronia LLC under the commercial name of RiverFlow2D Plus GPU. There are other GPU-accelerated modules for mud-flow dynamics, oil-spill simulation, erosion/deposition phenomena and pollutant transport.
P. Garcia-Navarro is head of the Computational Hydraulics group and chair professor in University of Zaragoza. Since the late 1990s, she has focused on numerical models to simulate steady and unsteady 1D, 2D and coupled 1D-2D free surface flow with wet-dry fronts; development of numerical hydrological-hydraulic models to evaluate climate change in basins; and the specific field of numerical models for efficient and accurate simulation in realistic cases with applications to engineering.
A. Lacasta is a PhD candidate. His research interests are in the areas of high performance computational mechanics, PDE-constrained optimization and efficient implementation of numerical methods for partial differential equations. He works on the development of efficient computational tools and adjoint-based optimizers for the modelling of free surface flows.
As a GPU Research Center, University of Zaragoza-LIFTEC(CSIC) will have pre-release access to NVIDIA GPU hardware and software, the opportunity to attend exclusive events with key researchers and academics, a designated NVIDIA technical liaison, and access to specialized online and in-person training sessions.
About Universidad de Zaragoza (UNIZAR)
Universidad de Zaragoza (UNIZAR) –founded in 1542– is a continuously growing institution offering engineering degrees since the early seventies. Nowadays UNIZAR, with more than 40,000 students and more than 3,800 teaching and research staff belonging to more than 200 research groups, is well positioned among national and European universities. From its different geographical locations, UNIZAR carries out intense teaching and research activities. It has been one of the first universities to adapt to the European Higher Education Area and is at the forefront of international mobility, offering bachelor degrees, masters, and doctorates adapted to the European Higher Education Area. The university’s research work has increased significantly in recent years, giving it national and international recognition. It is the 8th Spanish university in terms of scientific and academic production, according to the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities produced by the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. Our collaboration policy with companies and organizations poses one of our main challenges: integrating students into the workforce through lifelong training. Scientific research, technological development and constant innovation are essential tools for economic and social growth. Research carried out by the University of Zaragoza is focused on technological, social, legal, humanistic, experimental and bio-health areas. It organizes research activity through its own research Institutes, joint or affiliated institutes, as well as through nationally and internationally renowned research groups. Its laboratories and scientific and technological infrastructures are dedicated to optimizing research by generating knowledge and promoting innovation.
