Attendance at the KIT Workshop “Plastic Transport in Rivers”

May 26, 2026

Researchers Mario Morales-Hernández and Pablo Vallés attended the workshop “Plastic Transport in Rivers: Connecting Empiricism and Modelling”, organized by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe on March 30–31. The workshop brought together researchers working on experimental and numerical approaches for plastic transport in shallow flow environments, with the objective of strengthening the connection between laboratory observations, field measurements, and computational modeling techniques.
During the workshop, our researchers, together with external collaborator Daniel Caviedes-Voullième, presented recent developments in plastic transport modeling implemented within the SERGHEI framework, an open-source computational platform developed collaboratively by several members of our research group and international partners. The workshop also provided an opportunity to discuss current challenges in the modeling of plastic transport in rivers. The interaction with experimental researchers and numerical modelers contributed to establishing new perspectives for future collaborations and benchmarking activities in the field of environmental fluid mechanics and plastic transport modelling.
